The works of the Kolkata-based artist, Suhasini Kejriwal, build a spectacularly complex world of gem-colored visions and enigmatic life forms, which stands in the liminal space between what is natural and fantastical, delightful and nightmarish. In 2006, Kejriwal completed her Master of Fine Arts at London Goldsmith’s College and participated as a finalist in the Celeste Art Prize show. One year later, she began experimenting with creating sculptures. Her mixed-media cacti stand in overlapping leaves of color and clusters of black spines. In her paintings, she grafts elements of patterns with thick sprawls of vegetation. At first hidden, insects and animals of giant proportions emerge from the tumultuous jungle. Nowhere does Kejriwal let the viewer’s eye find rest. Where one plant, flower or creature terminates, another springs forward in a consummate example of horror vacui. This constant overflow of sensations forces the viewer to decelerate his processing of sensory stimuli and break accustomed perception patterns.
